The Worshipful Company of Silverfists
The Worshipful Company of Silverfists, with a name giving homage to traditional trade guilds of London, is an illustration group based in Iowa. Founded in 2018, the Silverfists are dedicated the belief in the transformative power of story based imagery.
Matt, the paterfamilias of the Silverfists, is an artist and educator from Iowa. Though his formal training is in figurative painting at the New York Academy of Art, he has always loved the creative and quirky possibilities of illustration. His illustration aesthetic was thoroughly shaped in the 1990's by Albert Uderzo's Asterix the Gaul and all things Warner Brothers - from Looney Tunes to the Animaniacs to Batman the Animated Series. He first dreamed up the idea of the Silverfists in High School and is thrilled to now have some talented colleagues to join him in the pursuit.
Bee, from the small kingdom of Iowa, catches herself using illustration in all sorts of instances, and rarely reads a book without making a few sketches of the characters. She has been inspired by old masters such as N. C. Wyeth, but also has found even more relevance in such illustrators/ illustrations as those of Carson Ellis, Erica Henderson, Noelle Stevenson, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. Her interest in both realism and a more simplistic style have long been conflicted, but she seems to balance it most of the time. Bee has been greatly enjoying what the other members have brought forward, and hopes you enjoy them as well!
NJ, or Nattyjae as she's known on Tumblr, is a teenage artist and illustration student currently living in Iowa. She would like to acknowledge she lives and works on the native land of the Yankton Sioux People, land that was stolen and is rightfully theirs. NJ's a storytelling connoisseur and not only delves into to illustration, but also blogging, poetry, role-playing, and comic making. You can read her full Webcomic Zac Lowhard with this link! NJ would (unsurprisingly) like to thank Miyazaki-Sensei for being a constant source of inspiration. (She can boldly state she's seen all his films.)
